I am currently teaching a class on Fascism and National Socialism, and recently, we covered the fall of Mussolini. My students wanted to know if there were specific charges or reasons that Victor Emmanuel had for dismissing and arresting Mussolini in July 1943.
I have looked through a dozen or so books, but none of them provide a specific answer about the king’s legal rationale or political reasons. They simply state that Mussolini was dismissed, arrested, and replaced by Pietro Badoglio.
Do any of you know if the king had specific reasons or charges?
